The English Language Department at the Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University College of Arts offers an academically rich program, which prepares its graduates for careers in a variety of fields from instruction to, research as well as translation. Mission

To prepare competent graduates in the fields of English language, literature and translation to meet the requirements of the job market and boost research that serves the community.

First: Admission to the College of Arts General Requirements

• The applicant must pass all the first year (College of Arts Track) courses.
• The applicant must obtain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3 out of 5. 

Second: Controls of specialization in the College of Arts:

• Admission is by differentiation based on grade point average and the availability of seats.
• English Language Department requirements: (Earning C rating and above in English Language Course 1 and English language Course 2)

First year

During this first year the students will study a broad range of subjects that will introduce them to various disciplines in the arts and humanities realm.  This exposure will help them make an informed decision on what academic path they wish to pursue in the following years. They will earn 36 credit hours during this first year.

Second Year

In the second year the students begin to study specialized courses in the field of English Language and Literature including: listening comprehension, reading, composition, grammar, English literature and an introduction to linguistics.

Third year

During the third year the students will continue their in depth studies in English by taking courses that cover topics such as: syntax and morphology, semantics and pragmatics, applied linguistics, the modern novel, English poetry from the Romantics to the Moderns, learning the art of speech, English thought and culture, essay writing, translation theory, phonetics and phonology and examining English literature from the 17th century, as well as discuss the rise of the novel.

Fourth Year

The course work for the students in their fourth year will include: psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, language planning, language variation, creative translation, literary criticism and a look at the modern drama.  They will also cover topics such as:  research methodology and design, discourse analysis, English language and information technology, consecutive translation, machine translation, an introduction to American literature, an examination of the short story, children’s literature and, comparative literature.  The students will also prepare and present their graduation projects.
