Laundry Department

The Laundry Department at KFHU is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of hospital linens, staff uniforms, lab coats and tailoring services to meet the needs of patients and staff.
Laundry Department is responsible for providing an adequate, clean and constant supply of linen to all users. A reliable laundry service is of utmost importance to the hospital. In today’s medical care facilities, patients expect linen to be changed daily.
An adequate supply of clean linen is sufficient for the comfort and safety of the patient thus becomes essential. The main purpose of this department is to provide clean material to the patients and ensure that hygienic conditions are maintained in the process.

Laundry Department provides the following services

  • Collecting soiled linen from various places.
  • Sorting the linen and processing them.
  • Inspecting and repairing or replacing damaged materials.
  • Distributing clean linen to the respective user departments.
  • Maintaining different types of registers

Workflow Process

Soiled linen is placed into a hamper trolley available inside each ward and kept in the utility room. Dirty linen collected from the ward is transported by dirty linen trolley. The first pick-up of soiled linen commences at 5 am, 7 am, 11 am, and 3 pm by the laundry department staff. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided for the Laundry staff during collection for their safety. Distribution 9 am 5pm.

Soiled linen is stored, segregating whites and colors. Any patient valuables found during the sorting process is brought to the attention of supervisor, who in turn notifies security. Washing operators weigh each kind separately. Kilograms are recorded on “Daily Numbers of Washes Forms”
Hot water (20 – 43 C) is recommended for using in washing machines. This can act as a disinfecting agent too. The time of linen in the washing machine depends. After washing, all clean linen will go through the drying process. Linen is sorted out defend on type and color.
After drying, the linen is checked for wear and tear. The torn clothes should be sent for mending/ tailoring. If the linen is out of the scope of mending, the supervisor should condemn.
After drying, all clean linen is passed through the ironing roller machine. This process takes an average of one hour for each load. Linen feeds through the ironing machine then folds and segregate according to its label.

The finished goods are to be stored in the clean storage area before distribution. The clean linen should be checked for quantity before delivery. Then the linen should be distributed to different Departments in a separate trolley which are not used for collection.

Central Sterile Supply Department

The Central Sterile Supply Department provides complex services including the preparation of sterile medical supplies for the operating rooms and other units of the Hospital.
The Central Sterile Supply Department provides specialized hygienic operations (complex pre-sterilization preparation, high-temperature sterilization, low-temperature sterilization) whose outputs are sterile medical supplies. In order to routinely supply the hospital with all necessary sterile material, the management of the department closely cooperates with the leading employees of the surgery rooms and inpatient and outpatient clinics. The main aim of the Department of Central Sterile Supply is to guarantee a high quality and level of sterilization for all medical supplies.

The Central Sterile Supply Department, as a specialized center, offers the following services:

  • Disinfection, mechanical treatment, special treatment of all medical instruments. Organizing and completing surgical instruments. Surgical instruments are organized and completed into sets by qualified nurses.
  • Visual control of completeness, preparation and packing of surgery room cloths. CSSD technician carry out a visual control and check if surgery room cloths are complete. They prepare and pack the cloths either in single item packs or set packs according to requirements of individual surgery rooms or other stations and centers.
  • Final inspection: The employees of the department carry out final inspections, which are regulated by an employee´s code. The department takes care of the delivery of the sterile medical supplies.

Housekeeping Department

Housekeeping staff understand the importance of patient’s safety, they focus on controlling and reducing healthcare related infections. The role of housekeeping is to create a peaceful, infection-free and pleasant environment required for the speedy recovery of the patients.
Housekeepers work based on the Infection Control guidelines that the hospital will be free from infection that is required for fast recovery of the patient. Cleanliness is the absence of dirt, including dust, stains and bad smells. Now at the millennial age the germ theory of disease, it has also come to mean an absence of germs and other hazardous materials.

Housekeeping provides the following services:

  • Cleaning of patient rooms and wards
  • Housekeeping in ICU
  • Operation Theatre Cleaning
  • Segregation and Disposal of Waste

Ward Housekeeping

Ward housekeepers ensure that the ward is clean and pleasant to patient, family, staff and visitors. They attend to patients' non-clinical needs, providing more time for nursing staff to do the job for which they were trained.  Reduce number of microorganisms that may give and add illness or harm to patient, family, visitors and staff even to the community and refers to general cleaning of the hospital and clinics, including floor, walls and other surfaces.
Utility room in every unit is provided with housekeeping trolley with mop holder, detergent and disinfectant.
