Course Description
The Introduction to Islamic Culture course looks into the relationships between culture, religion and civilization. The five pillars of Islam and Islamic Law (Sharia) will also be discussed as well as an assessment of how non-Islamic cultures are viewed from an Islamic perspective. Challenges that the Muslim world currently faces are a part of the curriculum such as: Orientalism, alienation, modernism, globalization as well as terrorism. This class will also examine the issues of human rights in Islam, looking at equality, freedom, justice, and safety as well as reviewing the 1948 United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
