Course Main Objective
This course aims to make students acquainted with the basic concepts of bibliometric studies, their importance, aims and characteristics according to multiple variables along with applying laws of bibliometrics and using them in assessing library collections and services in the digital environment.
Course Learning Outcomes
- 1. Knowledge and Comprehension
- 1.1 Explain the basic concepts of the bibliometric measurements and their historical origin, reference citations and their styles and variables.
- 2. Skills
- 2.1 Interpret the laws of bibliometrics concerning measuring libraries and information centers’ services.
- 2.2 Use communication and information technology in preparing the bibliometric studies.
- 3. Values
- 3.1 Communicate effectively and practice leadership, upon necessary.
Course Content:
- Bibliometric studies: their concept, importance, aims and domains.
- Origin and historical development of the bibliometric studies (information measurement).
- Reference citations: their concept, importance, styles, analysis, applications.
- Laws of bibliometrics: Lotka’s Law of Productivity; Bradford’s Law of Scattering; Zipf’s Law of Word Occurrence.
- Electronic measurements: their importance and use in assessing services of libraries and information centers within the digital environment.
- Cybermetrics: tools of collecting data and their impact on the web.
- Future of web metrics.
