Course Main Objective
To define what is meant by ‘term’ and its discipline, its scholars’ efforts, methods of neology, training those individual working in the field, and be acquainted with all latest developments including term banks and problems which face neology and other problems.
Course Learning Outcomes

- 1.1 Recognize the importance of terminology in serving all disciplines through knowing its origin, schools its pioneers’ efforts in the past and at present.

- 2.1 Train on term formulation observing its conditions, theory and methods of developing it and relevant problems.
- 2.2 Use technology in following up the inputs of terminology through reviewing its websites and its world and Arabic banks.

- 3.1 Assume responsibility of self-training on developing terms and practice within a group.
- 3.2 Observe academic integrity in performing his duties achieving traits of the responsible citizen.
Course Content
1. An introduction about the course and its requirements.
2. Definition of the word 'term' in language lexicons and usage convention of scholars; explain the relation between the scientific term and its concept and the lexical word and its meaning.
3. Definition of terminology and its synonyms, origin and reason of studying it, its importance and its relation with linguistics and the most famous contemporary western schools.
4. Terminological efforts of the Arab and Muslim scholars regarding the issue of neology: phonetic terms as a model.
5. terminological efforts of the Arab and Muslim scholars regarding the issue of compilation and classification:
a- The book 'Mafatih al Ulum" (keys for sciences) by Al-Khwarizmi
b- The book "Al Taarefat" (definitions) by Al-Jirjani
c- The book "Al Kulliyat" by Abou Al-Baqaa Al-Kaffawi
d- The book "Jame' Al Ulum" by Al Qadi Abdel Nabi Al-Ahmad Katheri
e- The book "Kashaf Istilahat Al funun waleulum" by Tahanwi
6. The general theory of terminology and the most important Western and Arab research centers thereof, the difference between the general and special theories.
7. Training those individuals working in field of terminology and approach of neology:
a- The experiment of Ahmad Al-Khidr Ghazal
b- The experiment of Muhammad Rashad Hamzawei
8. Some methods of neology: a- derivation. b- composition. c-arabization
9. Problems of neologism in general and the Arabic term in particular.
a- Polysemy and its reasons, manifestations and methods of term standardization and universalization
b- The regulatory problems.
10. The terminological role of the Arabic Language academies and the Arabization Coordination Bureau.
11. Definition of term banks, their approach, objectives, advantages, types and problems.
12. Term banks in both the Western and Arab worlds.
