Course Description
The intent of this course is to introduce the student to furniture styles and design through exploring the development of furniture over the years. Furniture will be studied through the ages, focusing on stylistic developments, function and ornamentation of furniture from ancient Egypt through modern times. The course will cover elements related to function, material, construction methods, ergonomics and mass production by studying a selection of furniture. Special consideration will be given to human factors, safety and durability, which all play important roles in furniture design. The student will also learn how to identify major furniture styles and place them within their proper historical and cultural categories. Furniture style and design will be studied comprehensively with power point presentations, videos, lectures, field trips and projects.
