Course Description
Theoretical Content:
Preparation and physical, chemical properties and use of: Ketones and aldehydes, Amines, Carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Amino acids. One atomic Heterocyclic compounds; aromatic heterocycles: pyridines, pyrroles, furans, thiophenes, non-aromatic heterocycles: five and six- membered ring. Ring synthesis and reactions of one atomic heterocycle compounds.
Study Case: Heterocycles in Medicine.

Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, students will have the capabilities to:
- Name compounds from the various classes of organic compounds following the IUPAC nomenclature system.
- Solve problems demonstrating an understanding of fundamental principles and proficiency in organic chemistry.
- Relate the structure of organic compounds to their physical and chemical properties and reactivates.
- Explain various classes of organic reaction according to the appropriate mechanisms.
- Understand the basis on how to synthesize and characterize various classes of organic compounds.
- Deduce the structures of organic compounds from the corresponding infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra.
- Solve problems involving multistep synthesis and retrosynthesis
