Course Description
This course includes:
- A general introduction to ecology, its concepts and definitions.
- The general characteristics and components of ecosystems.
- The relationships between abiotic and biotic components of ecosystems.
- The course discuss some important environmental issues: environmental balance, and environmental hazards.
- Additionally, the course examines environmental impact assessment and population ecology.
Practical content
This portion of the course includes a study of some environmental factors affecting the shape of communities through the study of weather and climate factors through the measurements of rainfall, relative humidity, temperature, soil, and air characteristics. Some chemical properties of the soil, such as the water content, level of organic matter, humus, soluble salts, and pH of the soil are examined. A vegetation study, which involves analysis of quantitative traits to determine the prevailing cover the type of community under study (intensity, frequency, and abundance).

Course Objectives & Outcomes
- At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the basic concepts of ecology and ecosystems.
- Recognise specialized ecological terminology, ecosystem configuration, and environmental pyramids.
- Calculate values represented by some environmental relationships within ecological communities.
- Differentiate between different types of communities, ecosystems, and the types of succession occurring within the environments of the Saudi Kingdom.
- Analyzing the current environmental problems and their impact.
- Suggest solutions for local environmental problems.
