Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU) represented by the Deanship of Community Service & Sustainable Development under the Vice Presidency for Studies, Development and Community Service in collaboration with the Directorate of Prisons in the Eastern Province has launched a rehabilitation initiative that includes providing distance education services for prison inmates.
The President of Imam AbdulRahman Bin Faisal University, Dr.Abdulla Bin Muhammad Al-Rubaish has met the Director of Prisons in the Eastern Province, Brigadier-General Abdulla Al-Nafgan at the university, where they discussed developing the agreement between both parties which targets all Eastern Province prison inmates to provide them with many services including distance education as an undergraduate batch has already graduated from the program and that such mode of education contributes to rehabilitating the inmate personality and qualifying him, upon release, for the labor market.
The services rendered by the said initiative varied through the partnerships with various university colleges such as College of Applied Studies which has provided many training courses, College of Medicine which has made many visits for examination and therapy, College of Dentistry which provided a set of therapeutic courses for more than 2600 male and female inmates. Furthermore, the Deanship of Library Affairs has participated with many books which enriched the Arabic content at Dammam Central Prison where the colleges of Public Health, Education and Shari'a & Law have also participated with many services, as well as the colleges of Engineering and Architecture which have developed some of the prison buildings in the Eastern Province and in general all IAU colleges and supportive deanships have directly or indirectly contributed to providing such services along with the Deanship of E-Learning which provided electronic and educational systems for inmates whether at an undergraduate level education or in training courses.
