Course Description
This course is a survey of the history of architecture and arts from the early civilizations to the Gothic age. It examines the early civilizations in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, Greek & Roman, through the Medieval Europe, and culminating in the Gothic age. It looks at the built environment, buildings, interiors, materials and construction techniques in the context of development of civilizations. The course works both chronologically as a history of phases and styles, and methodologically, examining the contextual issues that give each period its distinctive architecture, i.e. the social, economic, political and cultural factors. It also explores the philosophical ideas behind the development of architecture, especially that of the classical ages. This method aims to help students develop their own historical perspective on interpreting the built environment.
The course also offers an overview on the parallel cultures happening in the same time frame to help students achieve a comparative perspective on the development of the built environment across different cultures. The course will be conducted through a serious of interactive lectures, class discussions and debates, and research assignments.
