Course Description
This course is designed to study the importance of medical and veterinary insects for humans, animals and poultry pathogen-host-arthropod interactions, vectors, integrated pest management and biological control.
Practical content
Mouth parts in medical insects; an overview of some medical and veterinary insects: cockroaches, bed bugs, sand fly, and black fly; myiaisis fleas; mosquito species and other, with a field trip involving mosquito collection or fly collection; identification of some medical arthropods.
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Name medically important arthropods covered in the course, by scientific and common name.
- Identify the interaction between humans, animals and the pest.
- Explain the effect of insects on health and how to transfer pathogens.
- Relate the connection between the vectors –environment- control.
