Course Main Objective
to make students acquire basic knowledge of modern linguistics through learning about the most important modern linguistic schools and theories and guide students to make use of linguistics in analyzing texts and through studying applied examples from the modern linguistic methodologies to the Arabic Language and highlighting the advantages of the discipline to the Arabic language through developing a comprehensive linguistic theory in analyzing such researches based upon harmony among the linguistic approaches and theories.

- 2.1 Analyze linguistic texts using outputs including theories and approaches of modern linguistics.

- 3.1 Assume responsibility of self-learning regarding applying the approaches and theories and practicing teamwork and leadership among linguistic groups.
- 3.2 Observe the scientific and academic integrity upon performing the assignments achieving traits of the responsible citizen.
Course Content
1. An introduction to the course and its requirements.
2. Origin of linguistics and its types (theoretical and applied) and its domains and relation with other disciplines.
3. Modern linguistic schools.
4. Effects of the scientific renaissance on fields of linguistic studies.
5. Levels of historical linguistics:
a- Phonological level (abstract and functional): theory of phoneme and its difference with allophone- phonological substitutes.
b- Morphological level (structure, form, function) (the concept of word in modern linguistic studies: the concept of morpheme- morphological substitutes, blended and generated conceptual and rare structures and their benefits in translation, arabization and usage)
c- Syntactic level (structures and functions) (grammar and syntax).
d- Semantic level (lexical, textual and pragmatic meanings) (semantic unit- semantic and referential meaning- context and pragmatics).
6. Attitudes of modern linguistics and antecedence of the Arab scholars:
a- Descriptive structuralism.
b- Transformational generative structuralism
c- Functional pragmatics
d- Speech acts theory
e- Semiotics theory
Antecedence of Arab scholars in attitudes of linguistics (Sibawayh, Ibn Jinni, al-Jurjani, Ibn Khaldoun and others).
