Course Description
The first part of this course will briefly examine the influence of economic systems on the development of architecture over the centuries. The course will begin with subsistence economies and traditional settlements; barter trade, trade routes and the growth of trading posts and towns, feudal economies and their architectural opulence, colonial economies and the architectural symbols of power and control. Emphasis will be given to industrial economies of mass production and the growth of mass housing, mass culture and mass communication, as well as the emergence of capitalist economies and their global influence. The second part of the course will be spent examining economies under the Islamic law (Sharia) and its role in shaping urban settlements, vernacular architecture and distribution of wealth. Finally, the economics of empowerment will be discussed, looking at how a decent life and living wage could be made possible for the millions of people currently living in poverty.
