Course Description
This course will introduce the student to two more fields in the realm of environmental design: urban planning and landscape architecture. The focus of this course is the process of planning, from goal formulation to master planning. The definition of “planning” and how it evolved as well as identifying the different types and levels of planning and how they interact will be examined in this class. Common planning processes in Saudi Arabia will be discussed using examples of plans used within the Kingdom and contrasting them with examples from abroad. The student will develop a deep understanding of our relationship as humans with the land, which will form the basis for the need to conserve the natural landscapes and create both functional and beautiful built landscapes. Lectures will explore the history of landscape architecture, the central ideas of the profession, the role of the designer in the problem solving process and the nature, modes and scope of current landscape architectural practices.
