Course Main Objective
This course aims to make students acquire the concepts and theories of indexing; various applications of systems of describing and analyzing information resources; the concept, tools and processes of bibliography control.
Course Learning Outcomes
- 1. Knowledge and Comprehension
- 1.1 Explain the concepts of indexing and bibliographic and authority control of information resources and its activities and tools.
- 2. Skills
- 2.1 Prepare a bibliographic record of printed and non-printed materials according to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules “AACR” in its latest version using MARC 21 Format.
- 2.2 Employ expert systems in information organization and retrieval.
- 3. Values
- 3.1 Participate in organizing information resources within a teamwork.
Course Content:
- Organization and management of information and technical processes in information institutions.
- Definition of indexing- types of indexing- importance of indexing- types and functions of indexes.Descriptive indexing techniques and records: its concept, types and rules and components of the bibliographic record in MARC
- Structuring the bibliographic records using MARC21 (main entry fields).
- Structuring the bibliographic records using MARC21 (title and responsibility fields- edition and publishing data)
- Structuring the bibliographic records using MARC21 (physical description field- serial- note).
- Structuring the bibliographic records using MARC21 (added entries)
- Authority control and how to build authority records using MARC21.
