TabsOverviewHealth care is undergoing dramatic changes at a speed that makes it almost impossible to remain current and proactive. The chaos and multiple challenges facing health care providers and consumers are evident in critical care where new treatment modalities and technologies interface with a continued push for quality and positive outcomes. Therefore, critical care nurses practice in an environment that demands the integration of high-level cognitive, psychomotor and problem-solving skills in order to provide safe and efficient quality care. In Saudi Arabia, nursing faculty are the main pool for professional nurses who are expected to be prepared in order to work in complex and challenging health care environments. Moreover in recent years, due to the increased acuity of disease and the economic forces, nearly all hospitals are undergoing restructuring, reorganization and redesigning to meet the increased market demand for creating new acute and critical care settings with a need for more nurses working in those areas assuming new and challenging nursing roles. In response, a rapid increase for developing the critical care specialty has emerged. Therefore, without proper academic preparation built on compassion, critical thinking, multidisciplinary research-based practice and continuing education, these efforts will not materialize.
