Overview

Otology/neurotology unit is one of the early established units in the department. It consists of 3 surgeons who provide otology services in collaboration with audiology and speech unit. It has expertise in medical, surgical and rehabilitation services for hearing loss in children and adults through its cochlear implant program along with medical and surgical treatment of ear infection, balance disorder, and inner ear pathology. The unit shares multidisciplinary services with neurosurgery department for neurotologic conditions including acoustic neuroma.

Patient Care

The unit provides care to patients suffering from:

  •  Congenital hearing loss
  •  Ossicular erosion
  •  Otosclerosis
  •  Age-related hearing loss
  •  Sudden hearing loss
  •  Cochlear implant
  •  Bone anchored hearing devices and other implantable hearing devices.
  • Chronic ear condition:
  •  Chronic otitis media
  •  Cholesteatoma
  •  Otitis externa
  •  Osteomyelitis of Skull base
  • Dizziness and imbalance:
  •  Meniere’s disease
  •  Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
  • Vestibular neuritis
  •  Vestibular migraine
  •  Superior canal dehiscence
  • Tumors involving lateral skull base e.g acoustic neuroma
  •  Tinnitus

 Unit courses and residents trainig

The unit organizes temporal bone dissection courses and workshops on annual basis, usually in the month of November. So far, eighteen temporal bone dissection courses were conducted in addition to ten cochlear implantation and implantable bone device workshops. The courses targets residents of the Saudi boards for otolaryngology and head and surgery and other equivalent boards in Gulf region. It also targets ORL-HNS surgeons interested in the field of Otology. These activities are held in the temporal bone dissection lab in the hospital. Also, the unit is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate academic curriculum and activities directed by the college of Medicine and academic affairs of the Hospital.
