Course Description
In the Building Systems I course the basic principles of plumbing and air conditioning are covered, along with associated design factors and practices. The basic vocabulary of plumbing and air conditioning systems will be covered along with the practical requirements of these systems as they relate to interior architecture. The elements and technical specifications involved in a structure will be discussed, e.g., plumbing, fire protection equipment and installation, air-conditioning, heating and ventilation. Topics that come under the area of plumbing will be part of the curriculum ranging from the design of the hot and cold water systems, waste plumbing systems, sanitary drainage systems as well as the design of baths and toilets. The remainder of the course will cover the fundamental principles of human physiology, thermal comfort and indoor quality. The focus will be on passive and mechanical heating and cooling systems and HVAC and their related designs. The students will participate in off campus site visits in order to view these systems first hand on different projects.
