Course Description
This class begins with an introduction into primitive prehistoric architecture and covers the history of architecture and urbanism of ancient civilizations in the Fertile Crescent, the Nile Valley and other civilizations in antiquity. A thorough analysis of the basic structure, material and geometry used in the ancient civilizations will be presented. There will also be an emphasis on European architecture beginning with the Classical Greek period and ending with Gothic Architecture. Structure, function and aesthetics in their cultural contexts will be addressed. The profound changes brought about by the Renaissance on architecture with new building typologies and ornaments, as well as the growth of the Baroque and Rococo traditions will be examined, followed by Neoclassicism and Romanticism. All forms of art that make up not only the architecture, but the interior as well will be included in this course.
