Course Description
This course will cover the basic principles of lighting and acoustics, how they relate to the special requirements of interior architecture as well as how they are incorporated into different design factors and practices. In the lighting part of the course the fundamentals of day lighting will include: The benefits and availability of daylight, solar radiation and protection, visual and color perception as well as thermal comfort. Electrical lighting and visual comfort requirements will be covered in this course. There will also be a focus on the principles of artificial lighting, lighting systems and fixtures, electrical systems, connection, distribution and safety standards, the requirements of wiring, etc. Particular attention will be paid to the lighting specific requirements necessary for a variety of activities. The acoustic part of the course covers the fundamentals of acoustics; human perception and reaction to sound, noise metrics, and environmental noise will be discussed. The nature of acoustic waves, sound and solid surfaces, sound in enclosed spaces, sound transmission loss, sound transmission in buildings, vibration and vibration isolation and noise transmission in floor systems will also be covered in the class. The course will introduce methods and strategies of how to acoustically approach a variety of structures such as multifamily dwellings, office buildings, auditoriums, etc.
