Course Description
The overall purpose of this course is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the visual arts. The first half of the course deals with the nature and evaluation of art as well as the processes and materials used in art. The course provides an in depth study of the formal elements of design and looks at a wide variety of both two and three-dimensional art in order to learn about the processes and tools. The second half of the semester is spent in a more or less chronological study of the history or art, from the early prehistoric period to contemporary art. Special emphasis will be given to a variety of art in general and Islamic art and work done by Arab artists in particular. Overall, the course will encourage an appreciation of the visual arts, in which students will examine and discuss many works. The course will also analyze several works in terms of their formal structure as well as the cultural and historical context of these works. The students will have site visits to art galleries, conservation projects, designer workshops, etc.
